It’s the result of reimbursement changes by payers and CMS, the relative consistency in the upper echelons of the halls of healthcare, and a grouping of regulatory bodies who have kept the needle moving steadily forward regardless of administration changes in the past three decades. In a nutshell, it comes down to payment for value, not volume. Able to demonstrate positive impacts to patient outcomes and HCOs are in the clear. Struggle to do so and they’ll need to hope for the best. In short order, organizations who are unable to prove their mettle through advanced population health workflows and analytics will encounter major impacts to bottom lines and precipitate the ongoing trend of mergers and acquisitions by those ahead of the curve (or those simply savvy enough to leverage their size for better bargaining position). As one may extrapolate, the HIT landscape is rapidly undulating to keep pace as metaphorically steepening roads to improved outcomes demand whole data ecosystems capable of revealing progress through advanced analytics. It’s an uphill challenge for even the most advanced thinkers in the field.
